Our Services

At Dog and Cat Dermatology we provide a wide array of dermatologic services. Explore below to learn about some of the services we offer.

  • Recurrent ear infections can result in permanent alterations to the ear canal and require surgery intervention. Determining the underlying cause of otitis and early treatment can help avoid chronic discomfort and damage.

  • Recurrent skin infections can cause hair loss, crusts, bumps, and thickening of the skin. This typically leads to patient discomfort. Determining the underlying cause of the skin infections is key in preventing recurrent infections and relieving discomfort.

  • Allergies can lead to severe discomfort to patients and cause recurrent skin and ear infections. We specialize in diagnosing the specific type of allergy your pet is dealing with. This allows us to formulate a plan specific for your pet to help improve their quality of life. We have extensive knowledge on the treatment options and potential risks of these medications and will formulate a treatment plan specific to you and your pet’s needs.

  • Autoimmune skin diseases can lead to a wide array of skin lesions that can range from benign hair loss to severe skin discomfort/pain. We specialize at diagnosing and managing these diseases. Typically, lifelong management with immune-suppressant medications is needed and side effects to these medications can also lead to severe complications. We have extensive experience with managing the autoimmune disease while also limiting side effects to the treatment medications.

  • Environmental allergies are diagnosed by confirming the presence of clinical signs and ruling out other similar skin disorders such as food allergies and flea allergies. If environmental allergies have been diagnosed, intradermal allergy testing (IDAT) is often recommended to identify specific allergens. By identifying specific allergens, individualized immunotherapy treatment (allergy shots) can be formulated and administered to decrease sensitivity to allergens. Immunotherapy works similar to a vaccine, allowing the patient to develop immunity or tolerance to an allergen by gradually increasing the dose of the specific allergens. Immunotherapy can allow us to limit patients’ recurrent skin/ear infection, decrease inflammation, and reduce other medications that have potential side effects. Immunotherapy can be administered as an injectable or oral drops.

  • Cytology is a critical diagnostic tool that can help us in managing skin diseases. It can help us diagnose infections, identify types of growths on the body, and identify specific cells that can help diagnose allergies, auto-immune diseases, and cancer. Most of our treatment plans are based off cytology that we read in-house.

  • Video-otoscopy is the use of a small video camera to illuminate and transmit magnified images of the ear canal and eardrum to a screen. The otoscope has a port that allows for the use of instruments that can aid in irrigation, deep cleaning of the ear canal, sampling, biopsy, removal of growths in the ear canal, and access to the middle ear. It is considered a less invasive approach to surgical options that may be recommended. We will discuss if we think video-otoscopy is the right option for your pet.

  • We utilize cryotherapy for a number of different growths. Typically cryotherapy allows us to avoid sedation/anesthesia and avoids the need of sutures.

  • We provide laser surgery for a number of different skin diseases including, but not limited to, ear and skin growths, solar dermatitis, papillomavirus, and paw disease. Laser surgery can provide less bleeding, less swelling, less discomfort, less risk of infections, less tissue trauma, shorter operation times, and allow removal of growths in difficult locations. Please let us know if you would like a consult for laser surgery.

  • Skin biopsy is useful at identifying many different types of skin diseases including auto-immune disorders, genetic disorders, nutritional disorders, hormonal disorders, cancer, etc. Choosing when, where, and which lesions to biopsy is critical and getting a diagnosis. Depending on the location, we can perform biopsy with local pain block avoiding sedation/anesthesia. Certain locations will require sedation/anesthesia due to safety of the pet/staff.

  • These can be used to identify resistant skin infections and atypical infectious diseases.

  • Skin scraping allows us to diagnose mites that could potentially be contagious to other pets or human family members. Diagnosing mites can also suggest other underlying health issues.

  • Venomous insect stings such as bee stings can lead to life threatening emergencies. We perform venomous insect testing and venom immunotherapy. Venom immunotherapy is the desensitization process to specific venomous insects. This immunotherapy has been shown to reduce the severity or prevent future reactions to venomous insects.
